DCEO's role is to promote and support
recycling activity and the recycling industry in Illinois. They
offer a wide range of grant programs for those involved in the
collection and processing of recyclables and the manufacturing of
products from recycled material. Financial assistance is
available for schools, public universities and community colleges,
private businesses, governmental entities, and not-for-profit
organizations. DCEO also provides teacher training and publishes
educational material.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA)
conducts household hazardous waste and used tire collections,
coordinates a network of locations that accept waste paint, and
prepares a series of annual reports on landfill capacity, waste
imports, and recycling and composting data. The Agency also
operates the Illinois Materials Exchange Service (IMES), which helps
create contacts between companies with unwanted materials and
companies that could put those materials to good use.
The IEPA also serves as the environmental regulatory agency
for Illinois, and issues permits for landfills, transfer stations,
and composting facilities.

The Illinois Pollution Control Board
is an independent seven-member board which adopts the environmental
control standards for the State of Illinois, and rules on
enforcement actions and other environmental disputes.
