Study Documents Recycling Industry
Recycling
in Illinois is a $12.3 billion industry, employing more than
56,000 people, according to a report issued in December by the
National Recycling Coalition. Nationwide, recycling employs
1.1 million people and grosses 236 billion in annual sales,
comparable in size to the auto and truck manufacturing industry.
The
U.S. Recycling Economic Information Project was conducted by
R.W. Beck, Inc., for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
the National Recycling Coalition, and several individual states.
The complete report is available on-line at http://www.nrc-recycle.org/.
The
study provides the first definitive evidence of recyclingâs
contributions to the national economy. "Returning commodities
to the stream of commerce is a value-adding, job-providing,
and economy-spurring activity", said Jonathan Burgiel, R.W.
Beck project manager.
The
study used best available data from 1997-1999 and includes both
direct economic impacts and indirect and induced economic benefits,
such as professional services used by recycling organizations
and the money spent by the people who work in the recycling
and reuse industry.
Both
private sector and local government establishments, whose employees
perform hands-on recycling and re-use activities, including
the first stage of manufacturing where recovered materials are
consumed instead of virgin materials, were covered by the project.
"Hands-on" refers to physical acts of adding value to reusable
products or recycled materials. This includes collecting, processing,
and manufacturing products from recycled materials.
The
national recycling and reuse industry employs four times as
many people as the waste management industry, according to study
results. Twice as many people have recycling-related jobs vs.
jobs in the mining industry.
The
study also looked at the impact of recycling on government tax
revenues, and found that the recycling and reuse industry is
responsible for a total of $45.8 billion in tax revenues, including
$24.6 billion in Federal revenues, $11.9 billion in state revenues,
and $9.4 billion in local government tax revenues.
